Gay Caswell has cut up her Sask Health (Medicare) Card and has sent it and a letter to Hon. Dustin Duncan, Minister of Health, Regina . She has also sent the letter to Hon Jane Philpott , Minister of Health, Ottawa.
She is doing this because she sees the present medicare system plus the Liberal government’s commitment to legalise murder through Bill C-14 is a real and present threat to her life and those of others.
In December 21, 2011 she entered the emergency of La Ronge Hospital, 175 km from her home which is her nearest hospital. She was refused admittance and anitbiotics for three hours although her foot was gangrenous and steadily going blacker . While in the hospital while her foot and blood infection was quickly getting better she was constantly told that she needed to go to Saskatoon to have her foot removed. She refused. Every day for at least three times a day she was pressured to have it removed. She consistently said no. She began to say “ no” as soon as a doctor entered her room. Staff would try to get permission from her husband and her daughter even though she was fully capable of making the decision herself. A male nurse would berate her for “ opposing the doctors like that.” Twelve days later she signed herself out of the hospital with two feet and ten toes intact.
Since then she has been told that she is not allowed medical entry to La Ronge Hospital . A doctor refused to see her in Weyburn when she needed a $17.00 prescription. La Ronge Hospital refused to send my medical records to a doctor in Chicago. She was ordered to see a surgeon in Prince Albert when she was an evacuee from wildfires last year.
“ All this was done without Bill C-14. At each step there were medical staff helping me and fighting for my right to make decisions. But the possibility of being refused medical care or being harmed or killed within the medical system is becoming increasingly real.” Mrs. Caswell says.
“ In a few months I may be needing medical care and I know of no safe place to obtain it. Essentially I am in the category of a person who needs asylum from my government. Others are also in that category especially in this present medical climate with or without Bill C-14 passing.
“ Many people have been told that the reason I am not allowed entry into La Ronge Hospital was because I said “ no” even before the doctor said anything. I had to say “no” at least 15 times in a four day period. There is no NO to these death pushers. I am being punished and my life is being threatened by denial of health care because five years ago I said “no”. How can a very sick, elderly or dying person defend themselves into today’s hospitals?

Southend Clinic, On its way to criminal negligence

Question: What have the following ailments in common?
(1.) Five large boils
(2.) Bladder infection
(3.) A severe bout of arthritis
(4.) Blood poisoning to the point that the blood oozing from a toe, gum and stomach sore was not red but yellowish- orange.
(5,) chest infection, fever and a history of abscessed tonsils.
Answer: These ailments of five Brabant Lake individuals were all treated exclusively with Motrin, a pain killer and nothing else, by the Southend , Reindeer Lake Clinic.
The clinic is on the reserve and according to information gathered this morning it is not accountable to :
(a.) The Mamawetan Health Region in La Ronge
(b.) The Ministry of Health, Saskatchewan
( c. ) Sask. College of Physicians and Surgeons.
(d.) Health Canada, Regina which chooses to communicate only with 4 recorded messages on topics like tobacco compliance
I already knew that the clinic does not practise accountability to their clients, usual professional ethics in areas of confidentiality, patient rights, training and educational standards and equality of persons.
I already knew that they get a huge amount of money from all levels of government, federal, provincial, regional health and band. As alwaus no one is willing or is able to tell me how much tax payer money they get.
Brabant Lake is a non- reserve community 45 km. South of Southend. The clinic is its only health care facility within a hundred miles. Many people do not have vehicles and depend on Southend medical taxis. Yesterday a person phoning on behalf of a very sick adult was told that Brabant Lake can’t have medical taxis. The caller reminded her that taxis come here all the time. The person said that she would ask permission from Regina ( Health Canada) to authorise a taxi. Apparently some people have a special number to access a live person
Last year there were public theatrics that Stephen Harper was going to take away medical care from all Indians. Brabant Lake people of various shades are still waiting to access real health care. We can buy or share are own Motrin. Like many areas of native politics a huge amount of money goes into health but no questions are asked about delivery of health services. When we have tried to draw attention to the poor, dangerous, unethical or non- existent health care in the North we are told more money is spent per capita on health in the North than in the South ( south of Prince Albert)
So? What does that mean? We need more people up here? Right. We have to have medi- vacs( emergency planes) and long ambulance trips? Right. We have equal or superiour health care? Wrong. If the Southend Clinic was closed we would probably be healthier because people would have no illusions that they encountered a medical opinion or health care. In the meantime Southend Health Clinic continues to be a serious health risk to the point it deserves investigation for criminal negligence and fraud. Gay

The U.S.A. Dept. of Health and Human Services has a pamphlet printed in 1995, revised in 1995 and in 2002. Here are some of the things that the pamphlet called MARIJUANA, FACTS PARENTS NEED TO KNOW.
1. Marjuana leads to other drugs.
2. Marijuana has immediate harmful effects. It harms short term memory, markes complex and even simple tasks difficult.
3.Marijuana impairs driving. It effectsalertness, coordination, concentration, and reaction time. It makes it difficult to judge distances and tp respond to sightnal and sounds on the road.
4. Marijuana causes respriatory and lung problems.
5.Marijuana has cancer producing properties . It produces head and neck cancer.particularly.
6. Marijuana impairs the immune system;s ability to fight off infections.
YMarijuana causes a higher rate of colds, lung infections, obstructed airways ( choking.)
8. Marijuana has been found to cause miscarriages in a study of animals.
9/ Children born to marijuana smokers have been shown to have an abnormal response to visual stimulation, increased tremor, a high- pitched cry which can indicate problems with nervous system development. The children have more behavioral problems and difficulties with sustained attention and memory. (This is often called ADS, Attention, Deficit Sydrome.) “ It is also possible that certain kinds of problems will become more evident as the child matures.”
10. Marijuana effects the part of the brain where memories are formed. It makes it diffucult to rmember things that happened a few minutes ago. It is harder to concentrate on tests and activities.
11. Marijuana destroys brain cells that effect memory. It speeds up loss of memory by twice the rate. ( Health Canada has done recent tests and has concluded that marijuana can cause Altzeimher’s Disease.)
12. Marijuana can cause psychosis and can worsen psychotic symptons in people who have shizophrenia . It can cause depression, anxiety and suicidal thinking.
13. Marijuana causes lack of motivation. Users do not care what happens in their lives, no desire to work regularly, fatigue and no concern about how they look..
14. Addiction to marijuana is more rapid than addiction to alcohol. Many people need professional help to quit. There are marked withdrawal symprons such as restlessness,loss of appetite,trouble sleeping and shaky hands.
This pamphlet is available through Youth Addictions Services in the La Ronge and
area. Marijuana is no longer just a youth problem. Since about 1970 marijuana has been treated as virtually legal in northern Saskatchewan. That means we have generations who have been exposed to a drug environment. There are seniors who are addicted to marijuana.
